Developing an application is a rigorous process that involves ensuring that your project not only meets HLF criteria, but is also manageable and can be delivered within your specified timeframe. Below are some tips and advice from people who have developed successful grant-funded projects.
Resources & Support:
“Identify the outside expertise that you need well in advance, and have a standby (second choice), if things do go wrong - particularly when you are dealing with outside bodies.”
“Take whatever advice you can get – get support from as many people as you can.”
“Have your networks in place and research the organisations you are going to work with. Because we knew who we were going to do work with – we had a publisher in place, we had a network of people who could supply material – it was easier…”
“It’s nice to use volunteers since they are very helpful, and help to keep costs down, however be careful about what tasks need voluntary help and what needs professional help.”
“Really think about and research your heritage partner, and look locally as well as further afield. They will have an impact on the work that you do, so spend as much time as you can doing research. Preparation is key.”
Completing the Application:
“Give yourself enough time to write the application, and work with your partner to get extra support to do this.”
“Talk to HLF and make sure that what you want to apply for fits the criteria - open up a dialogue and get advice.”
“Keep to the letter of the application and stick to the guidelines that are given - don’t overload an application with stuff that won’t get looked at.”
“You do need to work with a team of people with particular expertise, especially for larger grant applications that often involve legal/technical knowledge.”
“Have to have an overall vision for the project and what your outcomes are going to be.”
Project Planning & Management:
“Think carefully about how much time activities will take, because that’s not an easy thing to judge, unless you have been through the process before.”
“Try not to fit everything into the timeframe of your project. Do what’s manageable and capable within the time.”
“Have a clear plan - know what you are doing and who you are going to work with, since you may have to make changes to accommodate.”
