How to apply

Grants from a minimum of £3,000 to a maximum of £25,000 are available to community groups wishing to develop heritage projects.

There is no requirement for your group to provide finance or to have specialist skills. You should however, be prepared to invest time and effort.

To qualify for a grant, your project must actively involve the local community. You will need to apply as a group, rather than an individual. Your group can either be an established organisation or be set up specifically for the purpose.

Here is a list of the kinds of projects your group may get funding for:

• investigating your local heritage in a way that will explain and present what you discover
  
• materials and labour for carrying out conservation, restoration and improvement work to visible heritage assets
  
• work to help public access, enjoyment and appreciation of heritage assets and their cultural or historic associations
  
• specialist advisers to help with the project
  
• charges such as archive costs and maps
  
• activities to involve the wider community, especially young people
  
• production and circulation of information, hire of meeting rooms
  
• essential equipment to make projects efficient and effective
  
• training volunteers
  
• provision for long-term care of the project and assets e.g. securing a legal management agreement
  
• legal advice and volunteer insurance costs specifically associated with LHI projects
  
• Presenting findings locally, e.g mounting local exhibitions, printing and producing results such as producing village design statements or booklets.

Projects that do not qualify

• Grant applications for less than £3,000
  
• Projects relating purely to building work
  
• Aplications from individuals or commerical bodies
  
• Apllications from outside of England
