Your Heritage Programme
Grant Award £49,900
This is an inter-generational project, helping young people on the Moss Bank, Clinkham Wood and Billinge estates to explore their heritage. Working with older people in their communities they researched and recorded the oral history of these areas, focusing on memories of life in the first half of the 1900’s.
Volunteers were trained in research, interviewing, and recording skills, and worked with older residents to record their memories. The themes for the oral history work were identified by the older residents themselves. A team of young people from the local youth club were trained in video operation, lighting skills and interview techniques.
The memories captured were used to produce a DVD, a video, and a booklet which was widely distributed within the local area. Community screenings were held in Moss Bank and Billinge as part of two heritage celebration events.
The project has helped to bring the different generations together. The young people had a real interest in learning about memories of life in the area, while the older people who contributed were impressed by the commitment of the young people. They also enjoyed feeling valued for the contribution they have made to the community.
There is a growing sense of pride in the area’s history.
