Passion for Fashion

Young Roots programme
Grant awarded £25,000

Fashion has inspired culture, ways of life and challenged our attitudes to style and women’s role in society.  Young women and girls groups from across Tameside explored this rich heritage and the impact of fashion over the past 50 years, by putting on a catwalk show and exhibition at Tameside Art Gallery.

Inspired by new trends and old memories of clothes from their communities and beyond, participants interviewed older women about fashion over the decades.  Collecting photographs, recording stories and uncovering old items of clothing, the they pieced together the clothing story and opened an interactive exhibition mapping eastern and western fashion trends over a half century, using sight, sound and touch.

The grant to Tameside Youth Service paid for the participants to attend a residential course as well as supporting staffing and equipment costs associated with the project.
