Case Study

HA2 (Heritage Access, Halton Area)

Heritage Grants programme
Grant awarded £231,000

Norton Priory is on the site of a medieval monastery. As well as the museum, and archaeological remains, there are extensive gardens. The HA2 project has two aims; to reach a more diverse range of people in the Halton area through outreach work in the local community, and to expand the role of volunteers. The project is providing interactive heritage learning activities to encourage access to Norton Priory’s galleries, gardens and collections.

In the first year the focus was on work with younger people (11-25) outside formal education, and older people (over 65s), especially on the nearby Castlefield estate. Outreach activities included 1940s themed sessions in day centres, residential homes, and sheltered accommodation. These helped shape a 1940’s tea party on site, which attracted 500 people. Activities on the day reflected the history of the historic Walled Garden. Special transport enabled many people who would not normally visit Norton Priory to come along.

Specific roles for volunteers have been developed in all areas of activity, with built-in flexibility, so there is something to suit everyone - from short-term work experience placements, to the chance to work towards an NVQ qualification in Horticulture.

HA2 is providing fun, creative activities for all ages, encouraging people to learn new skills and take up new opportunities. Staff have worked with a wide range of local community partners, which is helping create a wide impact.
