Case Study

The Irish community in Manchester

Young Roots programme
Grant awarded £25,000

Young people from a variety of backgrounds worked with the Irish Diaspora Foundation in Manchester to research the impact that Irish settlers have had on the City of Manchester.

From the Potato Famine in the 1750s through to the crop of world class footballers in the region, Irish people have played a major role in the development of the city.

Participants have explored song, music, and sporting heritage and celebrated the findings in a booklet and exhibition.

In addition to research work with the Irish World Heritage Centre in Manchester, students examined and recorded a collection that included a copy of the Book of Kells, a “Famine Pot “ and farm tools.

The grant paid for equipment, resources, transport, and staffing to enable the project to happen.
