Interpreting Lewis Carroll

Project Planning Grant programme
Grant awarded £48,600

All Saints Daresbury PCC is leading a bid to develop a Lewis Carroll Interpretation Centre in the village of Daresbury. The centre will explore the history of the village, the Grade II* church and the early life of Lewis Carroll who was born in Daresbury and lived there until he was 11 years old, as well as his achievements later in life in writing, mathematics and photography.

Currently the village receives around 2500 visitors a year, many of whom come to explore the village’s links with Carroll. The village setting provided a backdrop to his formative years and it is recognized that features within the church formed inspiration for his later writings.

The Centre will also include space for meetings, exhibitions and talks. It will link with interpretation to be developed in the Church itself and also at the birthplace site.

The project will offer a variety of learning opportunities including guided walks to Carroll’s birthplace, schools sessions and talks on Carroll and the history of the village.

The PCC was awarded a Project Planning Grant of £48,600 to carry out audience development work, access work, and interpretive design works, prior to submitting a full bid to HLF for the fitting out of the Centre. Other pots of money are also being looked at to support the bid, including Landfill Tax.
