Passing Places

Your Heritage programme
Grant awarded £12,700

Traveller and Gypsy communities have a rich cultural history and long standing connections with St Helens.

St Helens Council used a grant of £12,700 for an exhibition showing artefacts and histories of Traveller cultures, including items donated by local families.  Storytelling and interactive sessions were run by Travellers to bring their culture to life. The exhibition has built a greater understanding of and respect for different ways of life.

FEEDBACK

‘The most important outcome happened during storytelling sessions with local children. The storyteller would ask for help in telling the story.  He would ask “Who wants to be a traveller?” and every child would put up their hand and shout “Me!”’

Simon Cousins, Equalities Officer, St Helens Council
