Case Study

Retro Radio

Young Roots programme
Grant awarded £24,200

Retro Radio was designed to enable young people to explore more about life in Oldham in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s – and to encourage them to talk to their parents and grandparents about what life was like in the past. The students have used this information to create vox pops, interviews and short documentaries for broadcast.

The local BBC radio station GMR were on hand to help teach the young people interviewing and editing skills and the group went live with a two week broadcast at Easter 2005.

Retro Radio was staffed and presented by the project participants. The grant to Skillsbase was spent on employing staff, purchasing equipment, training for young people and associated costs relating to the radio broadcast.
