Children and Young People Category

Heritage Heroes 2006 winners for Children and Young People

Project Name:
Youth Promoting Heritage – Our Home Town

Applicant:
Crewkerne Heritage Centre

Grant Awarded:
Young Roots grant of £21,100

Project:

This youth led project created 5 films detailing the history and development of Crewkerne. Volunteers at Crewkerne and District Heritage Centre worked with a group of around 40 young people, introducing them to the facilities at the Centre, helping them with research and accompanying them on their explorations of Crewkerne and district.

Few of the young people had visited the Centre before, nor been involved in historical research. This project has helped them feel more comfortable about visiting the building and enjoying the artefacts and ‘stories’ within it, which includes their own research and which proved to be a stimulating resource in the films’ production.

The resulting 5 films are an invaluable resource for the Heritage Centre, which will be accessed through new IT equipment placed around the Centre. This project has been of benefit to the young people involved who have gained new skills and confidence through their involvement and the existing volunteers at the Centre who have gained experience of working with this audience. The young people have also contributed to the future development of the Centre by making helpful suggestions about raising its appeal and relevance to them.

Winner Because:
It is both inter-generational and empowering; it shows young people taking control, steering and enjoying their project and taking an interest in their surroundings, the place where they live, their home town.To quote one of the young people ‘it made a boring place interesting’!
