Who do we want to be?

Exploring the history of coal transportation in Goole, Yorkshire

Liz Forgan, former Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund speaking in 2004, commented: "When I visit projects funded by us it is clear to me heritage is the key to identity. Without our memory, how do we know who we are, where we have come from and, most importantly, where we are going?"

This view of heritage as a dynamic influence on the future of people and communities led HLF to launch a nationwide discussion about heritage and identity. Starting in 2004, we have held debates in London, Edinburgh and Wales, and we are soon coming to Northern Ireland.
