£9million boost for World Heritage sites

Two of Britain’s most iconic places will benefit from HLF’s latest competitive round of funding. A £4million grant will help open up the central section of Hadrian’s Wall, while an award of £5million will help the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich display more of its unique archive. HLF funding in Scotland hits £½billion mark

A £43,600 grant for a project exploring the life of James Watt has taken HLF investment in Scotland’s heritage to £500million. The project will allow 300 primary-school children in Inverclyde to find out more about the world-famous engineer and inventor, who was born in Greenock in 1736.

Fresh chapter in writer’s story

Laurence Sterne penned The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in the 18th century. Now Shandy Hall in North Yorkshire, where he wrote his most famous novel, will become the permanent home of the best collection of Sterne's writing in the world with help from HLF.

Carpet Museum

Kidderminster gets the red-carpet treatment
 
Kidderminster developed as a carpet-manufacturing location in the 18th century, with the first ‘Kidderminster’ carpet woven in 1735. Now the Carpet Museum Trust is set to receive £1.7million from HLF to create a carpet museum at Stour Vale Mill, built in 1855 as a carpet-making factory.

£120million for Northern Ireland’s heritage

HLF funding in Northern Ireland has reached a milestone, with £120million now invested in over 1,000 projects. First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness were at the announcement, at the Northern Ireland Science Park in Belfast.

‘Postcards from the Park’ winners announced

The winners of the photography competition that encouraged people across the UK to capture what they love about their local park were announced in September. After launching in London, an exhibition of the winning entries will open in Birkenhead Park, Merseyside, on 20 October.

HLF welcomes new Chair of the Board

Jenny Abramsky, previously Director of BBC Audio & Music, joined HLF as Chair of the Board of Trustees on 1 October. She takes over from Dame Liz Forgan, who has left HLF after more than seven years.
