Introduction
At the very heart of HLF’s work lies conservation, education and getting people actively involved in their heritage. HLF grants are making a huge difference to all types of heritage – from iconic buildings to smaller community projects. Much of the work we fund involves maintaining the historic environment and relies on craftsmen and women with the necessary specialist skills.
In 2005 HLF awarded a total of £7m to fund 10 Training Bursaries Schemes. Each bursary set up specialist training placements at heritage sites and recruits bursary holders to take up these placements. Bursary holders receive mentoring, training and assessment from skilled heritage professionals and craftspeople.
Recruitment for bursary holders commenced in Spring 2006 and is managed by the 10 schemes.

Bursary scheme aims
The training bursary scheme aims to improve the quality of skills available to the heritage sector by providing new entrants or existing staff with work-based training opportunities.
It also intends to develop innovative, exemplar training schemes which promote diversity in the workforce, enable heritage organisations to work in partnership with other agencies and to disseminate good practice.
