1 How long can my project last for?
We can fund projects for up to five years. In practice, we normally expect to see projects completed within three years.

4 Do I need to get quotes for my project work, and if so, how many?
If you receive a grant, you must get at least three quotes for all goods, work and services worth £10,000 or more. You do not have to provide three quotes when you submit your application, but you will need to explain how you have arrived at the estimated cost for these goods, works and services in your application form.
5 Do I need to complete a pre-application enquiry form?
If you feel you need support and guidance from a mentor you will need to complete a pre-application enquiry form.
6 What is the role of a mentor?
The role of the mentor is to support your organisation as you develop your project. They do not manage the project for you. A mentor can give you advice on general issues relating to how you carry out the project, specialist areas where your project team lacks experience and guidance on good practice.
The mentor will normally give up to three days of their time throughout the life of your project. We will give you a list of names to choose from. You can include the cost of this in your request for a grant. There is a heading within the budget section of the application form which covers the costs of mentors. You should include the cost of a mentor within your total request for a grant, which should not be more than £50,000.
If you feel you need support and guidance from a mentor you will need to complete a pre-application enquiry form, letting us know that you feel this would be appropriate for your project.
7 How old does something have to be, to be considered heritage?
Heritage can be any age. However, if you are considering buying a heritage item then it needs to be more than 10 years old.
8 Can private owners apply?
Private owners can apply under this programme for projects which create activities for the public to learn about and take part in heritage. They cannot apply for a grant for capital or conservation work to private property.
9 If an applicant is rejected can they reapply?
You can reapply provided the proposals for your new application are materially different from your unsuccessful application, particularly in relation to value to money if this was the reason for rejection. You will also need to take into account any feedback from your grant officer given in your decision letter.
10 Is the grant paid in full or instalments?
We normally pay your grant in three instalments – 50%, 40% and 10%. 50% of your grant will be paid up front when you receive written permission to start the project. When you apply for your next 40% of your grant, you will need to send us proof of how you have spent the first 50%. We will pay the final 10% of your grant when your project is completed and we have received your final completion and evaluation report.
