FAQs

What sort of projects does HLF fund?
We can fund all kinds of projects, as long as they are about an aspect of the local, regional or national heritage of the UK and they meet our aims.

Does HLF have a special grants programme to fund projects that relate to the First World War?
No. You can apply under any one of our existing grant programmes.

Is there a closing date for applications?
Young Roots and Your Heritage are rolling programmes, and there are no deadlines for applications. You will receive a decision on your project within 10 weeks from us receiving your completed application.

Heritage Grants is also a rolling programme, and there are no deadlines for applications for grants under £5million. It will take us three months from the date we receive your completed application to assess it. We will then decide on your application at the next available meeting after the three-month assessment process has passed.

Applications for grants of £5million or more are assessed, in a competitive batch, once a year by our Board. The deadline for first-round applications is 30 November for each year with a decision by April the following year.

How can I find out about other groups in my area that might be developing projects?
The Imperial War Museums’ centenaries network will be a good place to start – see www.1914.org/partners.

If you complete one of our pre-application forms to get some advice from your local HLF development team, our staff will tell you if your project duplicates another one that is happening nearby. We will regularly update our website with information on projects we have funded.

Can I get a grant to take a group to visit the former battlefields and cemeteries in Europe?
No. We can only fund activity within the UK. We cannot fund travel overseas.
