Heritage Articulate

Purpose
To explore what we mean by heritage. It is an interactive exercise to stimulate young people’s ideas of heritage.

Materials
Cards with a list of heritage themes e.g.
  • Museums
  • Gardens
  • Ghost stories
  • Legends
  • Fashion/costumes
  • Places of worship
  • Cultures
  • Festivals
  • Monuments
  • Mountains
  • Coalfields
  • Food/dishes
  • Allotments
  • Rock pools
  • Cotton mills
  • Wildlife
  • Traditions
  • Archives
  • Collections
  • Industry

Process
1. Give each group member a card

2. In turn ask group members to describe the heritage theme (wherever possible explaining why it is important to them), without using the word on the card, whilst other group members guess what it is

3. Once the group has guessed correctly, the group should prioritise the themes by dividing them into 2 piles “important” and “not important”

4. The same exercise can be used pictorial, with group members taking it in turns to draw the heritage theme rather than verbally describe.
