The Western Train Tram

Heritage Grants programme
Grant awarded £278,000

The Western Train Tram is one of Blackpool’s best known illuminated trams, modelled on a train from a Western film. It ran from 1962 until 1999.

Blackpool Transport Services Ltd was given a grant of £278,000 to restore the tramcar and allow it to run once again. The project will give new opportunities for apprentices, while local students will record the restoration. An audio commentary for passengers will include clips of memories and music from 1962.

It will provide one of the most exciting and tangible links for future generations from all walks of life to enjoy their heritage. With the Western Train, history really will come to life!’
