The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded the Hatherleigh Area Project Ltd a grant of £14,100.00 to re-enact the Battle of Hatherleigh Moor. The event will take place at the original battle site on 14th August.
The Battle of Hatherleigh Moor took place in 1644 between Cromwell's troops and supporters of the King, and will be re-created by Godolphins Regiment of Sealed Knot, together with members of the local history group, Torrington 1646.
Period costume will be worn to bring the past to life for spectators, and there will be displays of sword fighting and ‘barber’ battlefield surgery in addition to the main battle re-enactment.
Nerys Watts, HLF’s Regional Manager in the South West said; “Making local history come alive like this is a great way to get people involved with and excited about the heritage on their doorstep. It will be a fun day out for all involved, as well as a living history lesson, giving people the chance to really enjoy their past and share it with as many people as possible.”
Barry Downton, a volunteer for Hatherleigh Area Project Ltd said “I was extremely pleased to hear we have been awarded the funding for our project. The idea was born from a conversation with Sealed Knot member Richard Simmons back in June 2003 and the project has been growing ever since. The event depended entirely on funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund, so you can imagine how myself and Hatherleigh are feeling right now. All I hope for now is good weather on the 14th of August and a grand turnout by the public to join in this celebration.”
