Project Name:
Capturing Memories – Building for the Future
Applicant:
The Bristol Community Housing Foundation
Grant Awarded:
Your Heritage grant of £42,200
Project:
Working in partnership with the Upper Horfield Community Trust and IRIS, the Bristol Community Housing Foundation involved local residents of all ages to carry out this project linking the old community with the new. 600 homes were built between 1926 and1930 and formed the Upper Horfield estate. These houses were to be demolished to make way for new homes in the area and this project provided opportunities to link the old and new communities.
Many volunteers were involved in recording their stories of Upper Horfield. Volunteers gained new skills such as taking recordings and interviews along with acting as volunteer guides at the exhibition. The material that was collected, as part of this project, has been lodged with the Bristol Record Office to further preserve these memories. These, along with their photographs and memorabilia formed the content of a week long exhibition, which was held in one of the last houses standing before demolition, and truly celebrated life in this community.
