Heritage Heroes 2006 Winners for Wildlife

Project Name:
Bedminster Green Renaissance Project

Applicant:
The Southville Community Development Association

Grant Awarded:
Your Heritage grant of £49,900

Project:
The Southville Community Development Association ‘Green Team’ has been going since 2001 and consists largely of volunteers. This grant enabled the ‘Green Team’ to have a paid project co-ordinator to work with the volunteers and other organisations such as Bristol’s Park Service and the Environment Agency, and crucially, has raised awareness of wildlife in this area.

As part of this project, the team of volunteers has now completed work to provide safe public access to the River Avon New Cut; carried out butterfly monitoring; held guided walks including flower and bird recording walks. They have also carried out improvement works to Greville Smyth Park, which has helped to establish a Friends of Greville Smyth group. In addition, a range of leaflets and small publications are being developed along with interpretation boards at key sites.

There are many volunteers involved in this project who have achieved much in improving and involving people in the wildlife within this urban area.

Winner Because:
It makes an everyday place special for wildlife, provides long term sustainability and involves local people taking control of the project.
