The revival of Richmond Station received a major boost today with news that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has confirmed its support for the conservation, restoration and development of the station, together with a programme of education and interpretation. This Stage 2* Grant of £690,000 will ensure that the building’s unique architectural qualities are preserved and also ensure that visitors to the station will understand the important role that it played in the everyday lives of people in the area.

Fiona Spiers, Regional Manager for the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “The Heritage Lottery Fund is dedicated to opening up and maximising the use of heritage gems like Richmond Station, and I have no doubt that this historic building and its fascinating history will be protected for generations to come.

“The restored station will have a significant impact on the local community by attracting visitors, bringing the area’s history to life, and acting as a catalyst for further regeneration. We were extremely impressed by the determination of the Charitable Trust and their loyal supporters and wish them every success in taking the project forward.”

Over 2,000 people from the local community and surrounding area are members of the Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust (RBPT), and they have driven this project forward with their enthusiasm and passion for local history and heritage.

As part of this effort, local people have been asked to contribute their stories and memories of the station so that a written, and in many cases a filmed archive, can be created. This material will be featured in the station’s Heritage Centre, which will play an integral role in the restored building. Memorabilia from the station, the branch line and the railway companies that served them will also feature and help to keep this important historic chapter alive for visitors to experience and enjoy.

The RBPT has also worked hard to build relationships with partners in the area including the Georgian Theatre, Richmondshire Museum, the Green Howards Museum and Richmond Castle. It is also hoped that Richmond-based North Country Theatre Company will help the RBPT to develop productions around events that took place at Richmond Station, such as the arrival of child evacuees in Richmond during the Second World War.
