Our achievements : Heritage environment


  • Approximately £1 billion has been awarded in 4,000 grants to restore thousands of historic buildings and monuments

  • Award winning architectural, new-build projects including The Great Court at The British Museum,  Duxford’s  Imperial War Museum, The Weald and Downland Museum ‘gridshell building’ and The Ruskin Library have been funded, as well as the creation of new community facilities in historic buildings, like Maggie’s Centre, a former Kelvingrove Gatehouse in Glasgow, which is now a cancer care centre

  • Locally loved landmarks like Belfast’s Albert Clock, the Scott Monument in Edinburgh and the Earl Grey Monument, Newcastle have been improved and restored with Heritage Lottery money

  • Hundreds of other historic building have been given new life and opened up for people to enjoy and use in new ways

  • £380 million has been awarded to restore 245 historic, public parks ranging from urban and country parks to public gardens, squares, promenades and historic cemeteries

  • A recent survey of 2,000 people showed that the top 10 favourite UK buildings are more than 100 years old
