Project: Ballymoney Museum

HLF say "YES" to Ballymoney Museum The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has confirmed that a grant of £288,500 has been awarded to Ballymoney Borough Council to pay for forthcoming exciting developments at Ballymoney Museum. By late 2008, the museum plans to have implemented a series of improvements to the display galleries and will also introduce a new public information area. On completion, it will ensure that Ballymoney has one of the best heritage venues in Northern Ireland. The Heritage Lottery Fund contribution will cover 75% of the total costs for the project.  Click for more

Project: Hidden Connections - N.I. and the Slave Trade

Friday 3rd August 2007 (for immediate release) Northern Ireland's historical past reveals slave trade connection It is two hundred years since the passing of the 1807 Abolition of Slavery Act, and the latest grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will give people across Northern Ireland the chance to be actively involved in marking the bicentenary. Few people realise the area's connection to the Slave Trade but £37,000 from HLF will help shine light on this part of local history. The grant is part of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade which is taking place across the United Kingdom in 2007. It will allow the local community to explore present day Northern Ireland’s connections to a historical legacy that has remained largely unexplored by historians until recently. The HLF grant will increase awareness and understanding of these links by marking the anniversary with an exhibition to explore Northern Ireland’s unique relationship with the slave trade and the campaign for its abolition.  Click for more

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR IRREPLACEABLE TREASURES The Woodland Trust calls for urgent action as it launches the first ever inventory of Northern Ireland’s ancient woodland Ancient woods are many times scarcer in Northern Ireland than in the rest of the UK, yet are still being lost at an alarming rate, according to the results of a four-year project carried out by the Woodland Trust.  Click for more


Project: Deaf Heritage

The history of Deaf people in Northern Ireland is to be recorded, preserved and shared thanks to a unique project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) it was announced today. The aim of the project, is to create a lasting and educational record of the life and times of Deaf people from the 1890s to the current day. Up to 150 Deaf people will be involved in the project which will research, collect, record, catalogue, preserve and share the history, experiences and memories of Deaf people from across Northern Ireland. The project will culminate in the creation of a DVD charting the history and the challenges faced by the Deaf community before the aid of modern technology.  Click for more


Project: Castle Espie Wetland Restoration

The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s Castle Espie centre, where tens of thousands of wild birds can be seen, is celebrating a lottery win of £2,975,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) it was announced today. The site in Co. Down is adjacent to Strangford Lough, one of the most highly designated sites in Europe. Now thanks to HLF, plans can get underway for habitats to be restored and enhanced, new paths and trails constructed, visitor facilities improved and education opportunities expanded to offer visitors, young and old, more places to explore, and heritage to discover.  Click for more

If you’ve ever wondered where your ancestors lived and worked, or thought about tracing your family tree then help is now at hand thanks to a new website launching today. The free website (www.belfastfamilyhistory.com) charts the life and times of more than 30,000 people who were living in the Falls and the Shankill wards of West Belfast in 1911.  Click for more


Project: Birds in the Park

Children from the Holy Family Youth Centre are to research the history of Belfast’s Alexandra Park in a unique project it was announced today. The project entitled ‘Birds in the Park’ will be run by 12 young people aged 13 – 18, with help and guidance from the Holy Family Youth Centre and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).  Click for more

16th December 2005 CHILDREN TO UNCOVER HISTORY OF THE CITY CEMETERY Young people from West Belfast are to explore the history of Belfast City Cemetery in a unique project it was announced today. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern TD was in West Belfast to launch the project. The project has been devised, and will be run, by the group of young people, all aged 14 and 15. Their unusual idea has earned them a grant of £24,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).  Click for more


Project: Inniskillings Museum Development Project

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY TO INNISKILLINGS MUSEUM The Inniskillings Museum is to get a makeover thanks to a grant of £225,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) it was announced today. The award will fund the much needed modernisation of the museum, improving the facilities and displays. A key part of the project will see museum staff visiting and interviewing ex-servicemen and their families to capture and preserve their experiences and stories. A database of former soldiers will be created for people wanting to search for old colleagues, friends and family members.  Click for more
