1. Will your project involve young people aged between 13 and 25?
This scheme is designed for organisations that work with people aged between 13 and 25. The young people should take a leading role and take part in developing and delivering the project.
2. Is your project concerned with Heritage?
To apply for a grant under the Young Roots programme you need a project that clearly relates to the local and culturally varied heritage of the UK. Heritage includes many different things from the past that we value and want to pass on to future generations. These range from people’s memories and experiences (often recorded as ‘oral history’ or spoken history); cultural traditions such as crafts and costumes; historic buildings; wildlife, including special habitats and species; collections of objects, books or documents in museums, libraries or archives and places and objects linked to our industrial, maritime and transport history, such as coal mines docks and railways.
For example, young people might do research in a local archive or practical work on a nature reserve.
3. Do you need a grant of £3,000 to £25,000?
We do not give grants of under £3,000 or over £25,000 under this programme.
4. Will your project be delivered through a partnership?
All projects must be delivered by a partnership. Youth groups must work with at least one heritage partner (for example, your local wildlife trust or museum) to deliver the project. Heritage organisations must work with at least one youth group.
5. Will your project create new opportunities for young people to learn about heritage?
All projects will need to have young people taking part in activities which help them learn more about their own and other people’s heritage. Your project should help young people develop their own views about heritage.
6. Does your project promote taking part in heritage activities for a range of young people, especially those who have not taken part in heritage projects before?
Young people of different abilities and cultural backgrounds should be encouraged to take part in your project. All projects should promote the value of heritage to the widest possible audience.
7. Will your project celebrate the achievements of the young people?
All Projects should include recognition of the achievements of the young people and celebrate their work. Your project should include opportunities for young people to share their learning with the wider community.
8. Can you contribute to the costs of the project?
We can fund up to 100%, however we receive more grant applications than we are able to support. Because of this, we ask you to apply only for what you need and contribute as much as you can either as cash, non-cash contributions (for example, donated materials) or volunteer time
9. Will the project cost less than £50,000 and last for up to 18 months?
Young Roots projects should not cost more than £50,000 and be completed within 18 months.
