An introduction
Our vision
Our heritage defines us as a modern country. It is a national treasure which provides the foundation for our sense of identity as citizens, communities and nations.

Our view of heritage is a progressive and democratic one. Heritage is what people value and want to hand on to future generations. We believe all sections of society are entitled to identify, care for and enjoy heritage.

Our vision of heritage is as a legacy for our children that we can be proud of, making a positive contribution to national well-being.

Case study: Middle Inver Estate, Sutherland
Award: £124,000
Synopsis: A local conservation group, the Culag Community Woodland Trust, was able to secure the future of the 1,173 hectare Middle Inver Estate, part of the Assynt-Coigagh National Scenic Area of the north-west Highlands, thanks to an HLF award. The estate consists of upland moorland and lochs and is of exceptional importance for wildlife. By bringing the site into permanent community ownership, the Trust will ensure that it is sympathetically managed and protected, as well as showing how nature conservation and farming can co-exist to support the local economy.
