Heritage - linking the past to our future in the Thames Gateway
Heritage provides the roots for growing communities. The historic buildings, natural features, stories and traditions that are particular to each area help to create a sense of place and identity.

It is the distinctive and enduring character of places, the things that make somewhere special and different, that bring communities together and build local pride. In addition, heritage contributes to sustainability with the conservation of vital green space, and helps to boost the economy through tourism. Heritage has a place at the heart of any new community, in the Thames Gateway or elsewhere.

Heritage can play a significant part in ...

> Creating places where people enjoy living
By repairing and giving new uses to historic buildings, restoring public spaces, and conserving landscapes, often with community involvement, HLF can help to build places which reflect the histories and lives of the people who live there, and create a sense of ownership and belonging.
  > Bringing communities together
By providing communities with opportunities to work together, to uncover their own stories and to learn about those of others, we can help to build stronger, more cohesive and sustainable communities.
> Developing thriving local economies
By safeguarding or creating jobs, providing training opportunities, contributing to tourism and making run-down places more attractive to live, work and invest in, HLF funding can make a significant contribution to the local economy.

HLF has given more than £124 million to projects in the area
