Description:
To commemorate the bicentenary of the parliamentary abolition of the slave trade. The project will highlight the role played by those enslaved in campaigning against the trade and the contribution of African culture to the heritage of the UK. Through a year-long programme of activities, people will investigate the impact of the abolition on the history and communities of Leeds and contribute to a longer-term legacy of learning materials, exhibitions and new ways of working together.

The project will look at and research into the history of Black communities in the UK, their African roots from slavery onwards, and how this has influenced British society in terms of music, dance and language.

Project Title: Hidden Histories

Description:
Linking to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery act, the children will collate oral histories of BME community residents ranging from their 30s to their 80s recording on film, sound, photos and text. The oral histories will be archived by NWSA (sound only) and exhibited at the Trust's Cultural Centre with the help of Manchester Museum and Trafford City Council's Cultural Strategy Group.
