Heritage Lottery Fund Young Photographers Competition  

The Competition
This photography competition is to encourage young people to think carefully about their heritage.
The competition will be judged by a panel of young people, supported by the Development Manager and one other member of staff.
By entering the Competition you are deemed to accept the Rules of Entry.

Eligibility
The competition is open to all young people aged between 13 and 20 in the East of England (Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire)

Timing
The Competition will open for entries at 10am GMT on Friday 19th March 2010 and will close at 10pm GMT on Friday 30th April 2010. Entries received after this deadline will not be accepted. No responsibility is accepted for network, computer hardware or software failures of any kind which may restrict or delay the sending of your entry.

Image size and Format
Entries must be submitted electronically as JPEG files of no more than 800 pixels on the longest side and not more than 300 Kb in file size to eastphoto@hlf.org.uk Entries will not be accepted by post or hand.

Your images should be renamed. If your name is Paul Smith and you are entering 3 images, please name them smithp01.jpg to smithp03.jpg (with no spaces, capital letters or unusual characters).

Number of entries
Entrants may enter no more than three images to the competition.
Entrants must complete the entry form before any entries can be considered. The entry form may be submitted with your pictures and can be found by following the link below:

Subject matter and format

  • Entries may be in black and white or in colour.
  • Retouching / manipulation of images is accepted provided that all works are original works and not copies of other people's works.
  • Entries must reflect the entrant’s own image of Heritage. There is no fixed definition of heritage, it is for the entrant to decide on the image that reflects their heritage, and use the caption to explain why their image defines their heritage. This can include old/historical buildings; the natural environment; an image that reflects local history, myths and legends; manufactured items or pictures; or the heritage that individuals hold in their memory.
  • Entrants must provide a short caption of not more than 100 words to accompany their image, explaining why the entrant feels that the image reflects their heritage.
  • Entrants may enter a photograph that has previously been entered into or has won another photography competition, provided that, by doing so, the Entrant is not in breach of the terms and conditions of this HLF or any other photography competition.

Judging and notification
The caption will be taken into account for the selection of the winners, as this gives entrants an opportunity to explain why their image is important to them.
The Judges' decision is final and no discussion or correspondence can be entered into in respect of their decision.

Prizes

  • £250 Jessops camera shop gift card for the winning image
  • £250 Jessops camera shop gift card for the youth club, project, school or college attended by the winning entrant, or a youth project of their choice

Production and Viewing
The Heritage Lottery Fund may reproduce any submitted image as a postcard, and may use it for publicity and promotional material and on our website.
Finalists shall not object to any cropping or other minor alteration of the works for the purpose of reproducing them as a postcard, on our website or in Heritage Lottery Fund publicity and promotional material.

General Terms and Conditions

  • All Entrants release the Committee and their judges and sponsors from and against all claims and damages arising from or in connection with each Entrant's participation in the Competition.
  • All Entrants agree to comply with these Rules of Entry.
  • Entrants are responsible for informing the Committee of any changes to the information entered on the entry form, in particular of any change of contact details at any time before the announcement of the winner.
  • Entrants agree to take part in post-competition publicity.

Copyright and permissions
By submitting images to the Competition, each Entrant confirms and warrants that:

  • they are the sole author of each Entry and that it is their original work;
  • they own the copyright and any other intellectual property rights of each image;
  • they have the permission of those pictured in the image (or, where the image shows any persons under 18, the consent of their parent/guardian) for the usage rights required in the section on licensing below and will indemnify the Committee against any claims made by any third parties in respect of such infringement;
  • they have not licensed or disposed of any rights in the image that would conflict with uses to be made in the licensing section below; and
  • they have received any necessary permissions from the owner(s) of buildings included in submitted images for the usage rights required by the licensing section below and will indemnify the Committee against any claims made by any third parties in respect of such infringement.
  • Copyright of each image is retained by its respective photographer.

Licensing
By entering the Competition, you grant the Heritage Lottery Fund a non-exclusive, irrevocable license to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the images for any purpose connected with the Competition. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • on the HLF website and publicity material
  • for use in press releases to be distributed to national, regional & specialist press for the promotion of HLF
  • Entrants also agree that the Committee can sub-license images to the media for reproduction in connection with the Competition. However, for any use that falls outside this remit, royalties will be discussed & negotiated with the photographer concerned.

Data protection
Entrants’ details will be stored on the HLF computer system for the purposes of the Competition. By entering the Competition, Entrants agree that the organisers can collect, save and process the personal data provided (the Data) for the sole purposes of the Competition.
