HLF funding is about much more than money. It’s about creating opportunities for volunteering, learning and celebrating our culture. HLF is helping to give people a sense of place and spirit of identity, igniting a passion for heritage and regenerating communities.

In Wales we are proud of our landscapes, our industrial past and our historic buildings as well as our customs, traditions and languages.

Just think what Wales would be like without the Welsh language, our castles, Big Pit, the National Library in Aberystwyth or the landscape of the Gower Peninsula?

In the Wales section of the website we will use case studies and news articles to show you the broad variety of heritage projects we can support and hopefully inspire you to do a heritage project in your community. We encourage all organisations which are planning to make an application to undertake a heritage project to seek pre-application advice at the earliest possible stages.

Priority development areas

We have identified a number of priority development areas within Wales. They will be the focus of additional targeted activity by our development staff who will be doing more to raise awareness about Heritage Lottery Fund programmes and supporting local organisations and groups in making applications for grants in these areas. Priority development areas will not receive automatic funding but our aim is to generate a greater number of good quality bids from these areas which will be able to compete with applications from other places.

A number of factors were taken into account in identifying the priority development areas including lower levels of HLF spend so far. The priority development areas in Wales are listed in the right hand column.
