The HLF South West team is currently working in partnership with Gloucester Civic Trust, Gloucestershire Archives to encourage and support applications for funding from local organisations.
In the past the city of Gloucester has received less HLF funding than other part s of the South West, and though working with local organisations our aims is to give more people the opportunity to explore and learn about the fascinating heritage of the area.
Originally established as a settlement by the Romans, Gloucester grew in importance following the foundation of the abbey of St Peter by Aethelred, which subsequently became Gloucester Cathedral. Henry II granted the first charter in 1155 and later a second charter giving freedom of passage on the River Severn, which contributed to Gloucester’s role as a port, exporting wool from the Cotswolds, as well as leather and iron.
More recently the city has had a long association with the aerospace business, and in particular the jet engine, with the first British jet aircraft making its inaugural flight from the Brockworth airfield.
Whichever aspect of Gloucester’s heritage you choose to explore, we want to help you to develop your project. To find out more about the assistance we can offer call us on 01392 223 950 or email
