 Plymouth

The city of Plymouth has a long maritime and naval history that deserves to be celebrated, but to date the area has received less HLF funding than other parts of the South West.

The HLF South West development team are working with Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery, Routeways and Plymouth Youth Service to encourage more applications from the local community.

Plymouth was already an important trading post during the time of the Roman Empire and by Elizabethan times was the home port for many successful maritime figures, including Sir Francis Drake. In the 17th century it was the embarkation point for the Pilgrim Fathers, and gave its name to the second English settlement in the United States.

By the end of that century a naval dockyard was established at Devonport on the banks of the River Tamar, beginning an industry that has lasted until the present day. During WWII the connection to the dockyard gave rise to the Plymouth blitz, during which much of the city centre was destroyed and more than 1,000 people were killed.

Whichever aspect of Plymouth’s rich heritage you choose to explore, we want to help you to develop your project. To find out more about the assistance we can offer call us on 01392 223 950 or email SouthWest@hlf.org.uk.
