The former district of Caradon in Cornwall has a varied past that encompasses the stone circles and burial mounds of Bodmin Moors to the building of the Victorian Albert Bridge at Saltash. Currently, HLF is working with East Cornwall Council for Voluntary Services, Cornwall Museums Group and Cornwall Council to encourage more applications for funding from local groups.
The Caradon District includes the five main towns of Callington, Liskeard, Looe, Saltash and Torpoint. The traditional occupations within the district included agriculture, fishing & boatbuilding. The mining industry grew in importance through the 19th century, with silver, copper and tin all produced in the area and exported through the port at Looe.
Liskeard played an important role in the industry as a stannary town, where tin was assessed, coined and sold. Torpoint is an example of an 18th century planned town, the design for which was commissioned by Reginald Pole Carew, whose family still live at nearby Antony House.
Whichever aspect of Caradon’s heritage you choose to explore, we want to help you to develop your project. To find out more about the assistance we can offer call us on 01392 223 950 or email
