Case Study - Museum of Farnham: Garden Gallery and Classroom

Programme: Heritage Grants
Applicant: Waverley Borough Council
Grant awarded: £300,000
Project length: September 2007 - November 2008

Summary

The Museum of Farnham is housed in Wilmer House, a Grade I listed Georgian townhouse in the centre of Farnham. The Museum focuses on the history and heritage of the town and was shortlisted for the Guardian Family Friendly award two years running in 2004 and 2005.

Space and access inside Wilmer House is limited, forcing the museum to hold most of its education activities in the Garden Gallery – a 1970s pre-fabricated structure located in the grounds of the house. This no longer met the needs or aspirations of the museum’s education programme, prompting Waverley Borough Council to successfully apply for funding to replace this structure with a new purpose built extension.

The HLF grant has also enabled the museum to employ a part-time development officer for two years to help to develop the existing educational programme and to develop the unused kitchen garden into an education garden.

The aims of the project

The project had four aims:
  • To increase intellectual and physical access across the museum.
  • To extend the educational programme to new audiences.
  • To develop a wider and better trained volunteer base.
  • To increase income generating opportunities.

Benefits for heritage

  • The setting of the Grade I listed building has been improved through the replacement of the pre-fabricated structure with a new sympathetic extension and landscaping.
  • The museum has a flexible education and exhibition space in which to engage visitors and groups with the history of the town and the museum’s collections.
  • The museum has increased its income generation, helping to ensure long-term viability.

Benefits for people

  • The museum has been able to offer increased training for volunteers and now operates a volunteer database and email network. New volunteers are steadily being recruited to support the museum’s activities.
  • The Development Officer will work alongside the education officer to develop new projects and increase existing access and learning opportunities to meet the needs of all members of the community.
  • The extension is fully accessible and serviced, widening participation opportunities for those with restricted mobility, larger groups and families.
  • The work of the Development Officer will encourage and target new audiences, thereby engaging a wider spectrum of people in their local heritage.

Lessons learnt

  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with the HLF Grant Oofficer who can offer a great source of advice and reassurance.
  • Run pilots of education programmes to test them before they are put into practice, and be ruthless in your evaluations to ensure they meet the needs of users and providers.
  • Be prepared to be flexible and adaptable when things don’t work.

Long term benefits

  • Through the addition of the new extension, the Museum of Farnham has increased its available public space, allowing the museum to expand its opportunities for interpretation, education, activities and private hire into the future.
  • The creation of a new dedicated education space has meant that all school activities can now take place independent of the main body of the museum which is beneficial to both visitors and school groups.
  • The museum now has space that it can rent out of hours at favourable rates to local community groups for art exhibitions, evening lectures, daytime talks, training sessions and meetings.
