To commemorate the 2007 bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade, NNREC researched relatively unknown links between Norfolk and slavery.
Working with the Norfolk Record Office and local museums and libraries, staff at NNREC discovered a wealth of information, including chronicles of Norfolk abolitionists and people who acquired property with proceeds linked to slavery.
A play inspired by the research was created and performed by young people, and an exhibition of the findings toured Norfolk, inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about the county’s hidden history. An interactive website, www.norfolkshiddenheritage.org.uk, gives everyone access to some of the fascinating stories that were uncovered.
"We are proud to say that 'Norfolk's hidden heritage' was a very successful project and has received accolades and awards locally and nationally for the outcomes it produced." Sean Whyte, Community Cohesion and Diversity Officer at NNREC
