Project title:

 The Cavell Van Restoration Project

Programme: Your Heritage
Applicant: Kent & East Sussex Railway
Grant awarded: £27,000

The Cavell Van, which in 1920 brought the body of the Unknown Warrior from Dover Docks to London for its final interment at Westminster Abbey, was restored at the Kent & East Sussex Railway with a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The exhibition inside, newsreels from the period and a replica coffin and catafalque help visitors learn about the significance of the wagon, which also carried the bodies of nurse Edith Cavell and Captain Charles Fryatt.
