Project title:

Crossing the White Line: a celebration of Walter Tull

Programme: Your Heritage
Applicant: City Of Westminster Archives
Grant awarded: £49,900

The grandson of a former slave, Walter Tull was Britain’s first black army officer and one of the first black professional footballers.

A touring exhibition, a website and a booklet created by Westminster City Archives helped communities across the UK discover the fascinating story of the young man, killed on the Western Front in 1918.
