Catalyst Endowments evaluation

Catalyst: Endowments is a £36million match-funding initiative offering UK heritage organisations the opportunity to create an endowment and bring additional private money into the heritage sector.

The initiative is part of a broader partnership between the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and Arts Council England (ACE). It is designed to encourage more private giving to culture and heritage and to build the capacity and skills of these organisations to fundraise from private donors, corporate sources and trusts and foundations.

Catalyst: Endowment grants are expected to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Outcome for heritage:  heritage will be better managed
  • Outcome for communities:organisations will be more resilient

Commissioned in early 2013, the programme evaluation will follow the progress of the 31 organisations who have received Catalyst: Endowment awards until the projects are completed in late 2017.

Reporting annually, most recently in March 2017, the evaluation reflects a mixed picture of progress at a challenging time for organisations taking on a fundraising campaign. It highlights successes as well as challenges and reports on learning so far.
