Film Footage

Hi all,

We're completing a Young Roots Heritage project exploring this history of South Asian Cinema in Southall. The outputs are a documentary and 4 short films.

Our young volunteers are currently on the hunt for archive footage of Southall town and cinemas from 1960 - 1990s. These can be home videos, news archive footage or documentary extracts. They have tried the usual places: BFI etc but are looking for cheaper sources (BFI charge min £720 per minute!) to stay within allocated budget.

Does anyone have any experience of finding alternative sources for archive footage to be used in a documentary or exhibition?

Also we'd like to use extracts from Bollywood films for the documentary and wondered if the fair use policy would cover us?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Blaise Singh

  1. Hmm, one source that comes to mind is the Internet Archive, a non-profit library that makes loads of media available for free use… they are based in America, so it may be a bit US-centric, but when I typed in Bollywood as a search term, it returned 845 results…

  5. Putting out a call to local people to see if anyone has some old film in their attics is a long shot but definitely worth doing, it's amazing what people horde away.

Yes, good point - I know members of the Facebook group for my local area often shares historic photographs, so it's not a great leap to home movies, etc…

  11. Hello Blaise,

Perhaps you could get in touch with London Screen Archives? Their HLF-funded project London: A Bigger Picture has collected archive film from outer London boroughs and they have lots of digitsed film available on their website. They also manage a network of film archives across London so I'm sure they'll have some tips for you!
