The Signed Voices project captured the Deaf community’s memories and experiences - showcasing them to the public and preserving them for future generations.

Signed Voices was an oral history project with British Sign Language (BSL) at its core. It was run by Deafway, a registered charity that works to improve access to and awareness of BSL and Deaf culture.

They recruited and trained 12 volunteers to film over 200 Deaf participants. In pairs, the participants shared their memories and thoughts – conducted in BSL and filmed for preservation.

This project resulted in a live celebration event at the Dukes Theatre, Lancaster on 9 July 2016 and an exhibition on display from 4 July to 1 August 2016.
