North Duffield Historic Landscape Project

North Duffield is mentioned in the Domesday Book and there are indications of Iron Age hut circles in fields north of the village which may well date to the period 100BC to 100AD.

The Historic Landscape Project is a three-year programme of field-walking, geophysical surveys and targeted excavation to discover where their ancestors lived, how they impacted upon the rural landscape, their farming practices and lifestyle. In particular, children at North Duffield County Primary School are heavily involved carrying out field-walking and ‘finds’ washing.  A permanent record will be created in the form of a report, booklet and professional publication, a local collection of vernacular pottery for use by other local community archaeology groups, and an education pack based on the Iron Age complimented by the reconstruction of an Iron Age style roundhouse.
