Run by Cranborne Chase & West Wiltshire Downs AONB, and led by the AONB Project Officer, this project facilitated the creation of local community histories in 30 parishes within the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Eleven of those parishes went on to create formal parish archives within the project period. Each community’s unique history was collated by residents with help from nominated coordinators. They received training in survey methods, copyright law, recording oral history and data handling. The coordinators were able to share expertise between communities, such as botanical identification, flood records, butterfly surveying and publication. The archives are routinely displayed in a travelling AONB Parish Archive Roadshow which is exhibited at local events.
