Weymouth Sailing Club reached its 100th anniversary so volunteers undertook a project to celebrate and share its heritage.
The celebrations included regattas as well as an exhibition of the club’s history. Awareness of the club’s heritage was raised through the project and activities, which encouraged more a wider range of people to engage with the heritage.
Based at Weymouth Harbour, the exhibition included the last known Weymouth Falcon, a traditional wooden dinghy, which had been the basis of the club’s fleet for many years. The exhibition better interpreted and explained changes and developments in sailing and reflected specific historic moments and events.
Volunteers carried out club and other archive research, to create a History of Weymouth Sailing Club website and physical archive for permanent display in the club leading to collection being better managed for the future.
